History


Three former prefectural colleges were merged into one broad-based prefectural university, just as the traditions and originalities of the colleges combined to inspire a new university in 1987.

We will count on the tradition of quality and excellence which this university has maintained to lead us into our next important era, as the University of Shizuoka becomes an independent corporate body devoted to education.
1983 Report submitted by the Committee on the Question of a Prefectural University recommending reform and integration of three prefectural colleges to create a broad-based university
1986 Approval granted for establishment of the University of Shizuoka
1987 University opens with Koji Uchizono as first president
1988 Establishment of Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
1989 Campus buildings completed
1991 Establishment of Graduate School of Nutritional and Environmental Sciences and Graduate School of International Relations
1993 Takeshi Hoshi appointed second university president
1995 Establishment of Graduate School of Nutritional and Environmental Sciences (Doctoral program)
1997 Establishment of School of Nursing, Junior College Dental Hygiene Course, and Social Welfare Course
Establishment of Institute for Environmental Sciences
Ceremony of the 10th Anniversary of the founding of the University

1999 Masaaki Hirobe appointed third university president
