We are pleased to announce a special lecture by Professor Maria Rosario “Cherry” Piquerro-Ballescas to celebrate her receipt of the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” in 2025. This event is organized as part of the faculty exchange activity between the University of the Philippines and the University of Shizuoka.

Dr. Maria Rosario (Cherry) Piquero-Ballescas is a distinguished sociologist and a leading voice on Filipino migration. In recognition of her lifetime commitment to Japan-Philippine relations, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in 2025 and a Foreign Minister’s Commendation in 2022. As the author of the seminal work Filipino Entertainers in Japan, her research spans gender, development, and the evolving identity of the Filipino diaspora in Japan.

A retired Professor from Toyo University and UP System (Diliman and Cebu), she currently serves as a Professional Lecturer at the UP Cebu College of Creative Arts and Design and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Shizuoka and Research Fellow at the Center for Sustainable Development Studies, Toyo University. She is the coordinator of the UNU-accredited Regional Center of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE-Cebu) and a columnist for the Cebu newspaper, The Freeman.
